Rapa Nui by theancientofdays Rapa Nui by theancientofdays
You're missing out if you don't hit the "Full View". :)
This is today's work. I woke up this morning all jazzed about painting it because I thought the coffee-stain technique I use so much would work pretty well with stone.
This is watercolour, 9" by 17".

I studied the Rapa Nui people of Easter Island a great deal when I was at University - pretty cool stuff. So I have a kind of attachment to their moai. :)

Most of my Deviations aren't what I'd call "popular", but I have high hopes for this one. I think both of my watchers will probably like it. :D

Original no longer available.

Wow this is a beautiful drawing. I love all the color and it's great that you studied these Rapa Nui people. I'm sure I can learn a lot about 'easter island' from you

This has got to be one of my favorites from you, I'm such a big fan of your funny paintings. I rember your Venus painting back then.

This is so well done, you have a great imagination.

Wow! Thanks very much! I was so excited about the idea when it came to me. It was one of those "if I don't paint this right now I'm going to burst!" kind of things. :D

Beautifully done, Chris !

An hour ago I watched the news on tv. And guess what ... A tourist visiting the Easter Islands was arrested because he damaged one of these 'statues' by breaking an ear off. He wanted to take the ear with him as a remembrance thing. He is sent home now and has to pay about 10.000 dollars and is not allowed to visit the Easter Islands during three years.
What a coincidence .... discovering your painting about a subject I watched in the news ....

(This is one of my rare "wrong-account" responses. :D )

Thanks very much! ^_^
Good thing, too. The moai desperately need to be protected from visitors - not only are they unique in Polynesian art, but they help mark the history of the Rapa Nui people. The current residents of the island have completely forgotten the "old ways" because European visitors made every effort to eradicate their culture and language. In the 19th century, the population of the island was only down to about 100 people due to the slave trade and smallpox. :( There are now a little over 3,000 people there, but only a few are actual Rapa Nui.

Thanks! I hope you get to go! :D When you get there be sure to find Mr. Pakarati - he probably knows more about the old culture than anyone on the island. ;)

Thanks! They always looked so dead serious to me - I thought a little excitement might cheer them up. XD Glad you think the coffee stain works well; I don't think I could get that kind of texture with just paint. :)

That technique did work really well for the stone!

We have a tissue dispenser that looks similar to these where the tissues come out the nose . . .
