You know, I've studied a lot of Asian art, and one of my favourites is a very old sumi-e painting with a mountain and a poet standing on an outcrop. "Poet on a Mountain" or something like that. I always thought the lone figure looked a little depressed. I dunno. So I thought I'd try a similar painting, but make my idea of the discouraged lone figure the theme. This is watercolour on coffee-stained 140 pound Arches CP, 10" square. Yes, it says "Love Stinks", or more precisely, "The Stink of Love."
My thanks to Mr. Wolf and the J. Geils Band for the title inspiration.
Thanks! I tried out a little Asian style work with my adult watercolour class a couple of weeks ago - they thought it was going to be easy. After a few botched attempts, I was getting a lot of, "Hey! It looks simple! Why's it so hard!?!"
I agree with you - I've found that paintng something realistically is much easier for me than doing illustration or cartooning. I guess I just don't have the eye for it.
