Artist's Comments
My Tuesday evening student is Amy, and she's taking drawing lessons. That's right - drawing, from me.
 You know what they say, "those who cannot do, teach." Anyway, she's interested in manga-style work, and although I don't claim to be any great shakes at drawing and certainly not at cartooning, this one's not bad.Tonight we worked on the basics of inking techniques, and this was the example I did in class. She worked in pen, and I did mine in Japanese watercolour. The character here is Hikaru Shidou, one of three girls (Magic Knights Rayearth) who are meant to save a doomed planet. The studio that created her is CLAMP, which I think spawned the manga and anime craze. Comparing the older CLAMP work to the newer anime styles is kind of like comparing Rembrandt to Thomas Kincaid, but that's just my opinion. EDIT: I really got my feelings hurt by some of the comments on this one; please keep in mind that it's just a little thing I did as a classroom exercise. I'm no anime/manga artist and don't pretend to be.  |
