Artist's Comments

My Tuesday evening student is Amy, and she's taking drawing lessons. That's right - drawing, from me. :D You know what they say, "those who cannot do, teach." Anyway, she's interested in manga-style work, and although I don't claim to be any great shakes at drawing and certainly not at cartooning, this one's not bad.
Tonight we worked on the basics of inking techniques, and this was the example I did in class. She worked in pen, and I did mine in Japanese watercolour.
The character here is Hikaru Shidou, one of three girls (Magic Knights Rayearth) who are meant to save a doomed planet. The studio that created her is CLAMP, which I think spawned the manga and anime craze. Comparing the older CLAMP work to the newer anime styles is kind of like comparing Rembrandt to Thomas Kincaid, but that's just my opinion. :D

EDIT: I really got my feelings hurt by some of the comments on this one; please keep in mind that it's just a little thing I did as a classroom exercise. I'm no anime/manga artist and don't pretend to be. :(

This is really cute!

It's nice to see someone else who still remembers this series.

You know you're definately in trouble when your teacher asks if we can all go home early.

I'd like the Yaoi pasta, side dish of Yuri with Het sauce please.

Oooh, this is the first time I've seen you do anime stuff. I was meaniing to ask you if you've done any anime-style drawings. This is really cute, I like how you shadowed.

I'm really not a fan of the style....I mean, it's great for cartoons, and it's quick and looks good, but still....not that that's your fault. I'm just ranting, because I don't understand why it's viewed so much more than other types of art....

At the same time, I'm wondering-- is this "old" manga style? Or is it "new?" Because quite frankly....I don't know. o-o

Personally, I don't like Thomas Kincaid. We have a big gallery in town, and I never go in. He's from around here.

My eyes aren't blue, there's nothing I can do.

Ahhh, Rayearth. I never knew what happened to that series, as I only ever saw.. 3 videos. Episodes maybe.
The lineart is so nice.. :O

Moved accounts.

Oh no please don't!!! Manga are EVERYWHERE!!! To see a good author such as you drawing something like this, as though you were a little fangirl copying the simple image of a comic, gives me the creeps. :P

If I'm seeing another Advent Children fanart, I'm gonna scream. If I'm seeing another Harry Potter fanart, I'm gonna scream. If I'm seeing another Inu Yasha fanart, I'm gonna scream. If I'm seeing another Naruto fanart, I'm gonna scream and commit seppuku

Thanks very much indeed! I almost never draw cartoons, so this is awfully uncharted territory for me. There aren't many of us who recall this series, but I've always enjoyed them - they're classic. :)

This is, I think, the only anime-style thing I've ever done! :D In drawing class, I usually stick to very traditional kinds of work, but my young student really wanted to learn manga techniques, so I've been studying Ben Gunn's books. Since this one was an inking exercise, there really isn't much in the way of shading or movement, but I'll try to post those as we get to them. :) Thanks so much!
